When is the best time to see flamingos in Celestún?

November through March, with December–February the sweet spot, because that is the winter mating congregation when as many as ~35,000 flamingos feed in the estuary — the exact opposite window from Río Lagartos' April–September breeding peak. Is Celestún worth it as a beach or honeymoon add-on from Mérida?

Yes, as a slow half-day-plus-beach pairing, not a resort. Celestún is the closest flamingo coast to Mérida at 1.5–2 hr by car, with a wide calm Gulf beach, waterfront seafood coctelería and crowd-free sunsets — the soft-romance counterpoint to a Mérida hacienda base. What will I see beyond the flamingos?

A full biosphere: 300+ bird species, crocodiles at the mangrove edge and sea turtles, plus the Ojo de Agua Baldiosera — the largest freshwater spring in the mangrove, a cenote-like swim stop rising cold inside the salt estuary — and the surreal petrified forest. What's the real risk to plan for in Celestún?

Distance to trauma care, not crime. Celestún has only a basic local clinic; the nearest full-service private hospitals are in Mérida, 1.5–2 hr away by road — closer than Río Lagartos, but still not a place for time-critical injury.
