Boats run September to March, with the most penguins in December–January. That window exists because the Humboldt and Magellanic penguins — the only colony on Earth where the two species nest side by side — are ashore to mate, nest and incubate then, and return to sea by late March, when the boats stop. Chiloé is a wet, foggy, wind-exposed maritime environment: the Puñihuil boats run open water with swell and cold water, the Chacao Channel ferry can be rough, and cold-water immersion is dangerous year-round.
