What's the real risk to plan for on an Isla Contoy trip?

The open-water crossing and weather — not crime. Contoy sits ~30 km out at the seam where the Caribbean meets the Gulf, an exposed run where sea state can build and operators cancel trips in rough weather (especially hurricane season, Jun–Nov). Pick a calm-sea day, confirm the cancellation/reschedule policy, and keep life jackets on during transit. · airial.travel, 2026-07-04

Is the reef snorkel and boat crossing dangerous?

Both are low-risk with a guide, but respect the water. Snorkeling is snorkel-only with no decompression restriction — the real hazards are the open-water current at the reef seam, boat traffic and sun, so wear the vest, avoid all coral/wildlife contact and stay with the guide. Only through a handful of authorized operators — there is no independent access. What is the Ixlaché reef snorkel like?

It is the headline in-water stop — the northern start of the world's second-largest barrier reef.
