Sargassum, weather and water — not violent crime against tourists. 2026 is a record-forecast sargassum year, but Playa is moderate risk thanks to active municipal cleanup and a 5-km double-barrier program, with landings in pulses. Can I dive Cozumel and the cenotes from Playa del Carmen?

Yes — Playa is the best mainland dive base for both. Cozumel's drift-wall reef (Palancar, Santa Rosa, Columbia) is a 40-minute ferry away at ~US$32 round trip, and cenote cavern dives sit under 30 minutes inland.
