Good to know

What is the current advisory for Raja Ampat, and how do I dive it responsibly?
Raja Ampat sits in Southwest Papua (Papua Barat Daya), outside both, at the country caution baseline. The UK FCDO issues no formal advise-against level for Papua but notes armed separatist violence mainly in Highland and Central Papua, calls that security picture unpredictable, and says to take local advice; it does not name Raja Ampat. One live note: Wayag Island and the Manyaifun/Batangpele area were reported temporarily closed to visitors over local nickel-mining disputes, so confirm current access for northern itineraries. Carry DAN membership plus dive-accident insurance with strong evacuation cover, and observe an 18-24 hour no-fly window after diving. · https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/indonesia
Is there a recompression chamber, and how remote is care?
The nearest recompression chamber is in Waisai, the regency capital on Waigeo, roughly 2-4 hours from the dive sites. Its readiness cannot be assumed: dive-medicine sources warn there is no reliably operational chamber in Papua, and a DAN-documented case describes the Waisai chamber being under repair with the diver evacuated to Bali - nearly 2,000 km and around seven hours' flying (about four hours to Sorong, three more to Bali); Manado in North Sulawesi is the other referral. Treat Waisai as the nearest option, confirm its status through the operator or DAN, and carry evacuation insurance that will actually move you. Conservative profiles and nitrox matter more here than almost anywhere. · papuaparadise.com/news/diving-safely-in-raja-ampat + stayrajaampat.com (accessed 2026-08-09)
When is the best time to dive Raja Ampat?
The main liveaboard window is roughly October-April, when seas are calmer and visibility is at its clearest; June-July brings the most unpredictable conditions and is best avoided, and several boats reposition to Komodo for the Southeast-monsoon dry season. Water stays around 28-30C year-round. · liveaboard.com/diving/indonesia + blog.padi.com/liveaboard-trip-raja-ampat
Where do I see mantas, and what is the marquee dive?
Manta Sandy in the Dampier Strait and Magic Mountain (Shadow Reef) in Misool are the two manta cleaning stations - reef mantas through much of the year and oceanic mantas in season at Magic Mountain. The marquee reef dive is Cape Kri, which holds a record for the most fish species logged on a single dive. · lagaligoliveaboard.com/top-10-raja-ampat-dive-sites-you-can-only-reach-by-liveaboard
Dampier Strait, Misool or Wayag - how does a liveaboard week split?
Most trips run 7-12 nights to cover the three regions: the Dampier Strait in the centre (Cape Kri, Blue Magic, Sardine Reef, Manta Sandy, Arborek), Misool in the south (Boo Windows, Magic Mountain, Four Kings, Fiabacet) and the Wayag/north karst seascape (Kawe, The Passage). Longer charters reach all three; shorter ones concentrate on Dampier and one wing. · blog.padi.com/liveaboard-trip-raja-ampat + lagaligoliveaboard.com
What conditions and certification should I plan for?
Many of the best sites - Blue Magic, Cape Kri, Sardine Reef - are current-driven drift dives where a reef hook and good buoyancy earn their place; sheltered reefs, jetties (Arborek) and the mangrove channel of The Passage suit a wider range with a guide. Nitrox is standard on liveaboards for the repetitive multi-day profile. Dive within your certification and the operator briefing. · liveaboard.com/diving/indonesia
How far ahead do Raja Ampat liveaboards book?
The October-April peak on preferred vessels fills earliest - the dedicated Raja Ampat vessels and luxury phinisi are booked well ahead; hold roughly 6-12 months out for peak windows and marquee boats, nearer term for the shoulder. Confirm per-vessel lead times with the operator. · liveaboard.com/diving/indonesia
