What's the real risk to plan for — is the road dangerous?

The connective road is the risk, not the city. Highway 199 between San Cristóbal and Palenque via Ocosingo has reported armed robberies (predominantly at night) plus periodic CNTE union blockades that usually cause only short delays. What are San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán, and how do I visit respectfully?

They are living Tzotzil Maya villages, 10 km out, and a guide is effectively mandatory. Chamula's church is a pine-needle-floored space of Maya-Catholic fusion with ritual healings day and night and a strict no-photography rule inside; Zinacantán (99% Indigenous) is a backstrap-loom weaving town with a women's co-op.
