Is Uxmal worth visiting instead of Chichén Itzá?

Yes — it is the connoisseur's Maya city. Uxmal is markedly less crowded than Chichén Itzá, with grander Puuc-style architecture: the rounded-corner Pyramid of the Magician, the lattice-stone Nunnery Quadrangle, and a Governor's Palace whose five-acre platform carries an extended Chaac mosaic frieze. Can you climb the pyramid at Uxmal?

Partly — the distinction matters. Climbing El Adivino (the Pyramid of the Magician) is banned to protect it, but the Great Pyramid is climbable on its north side, on steep handrail-free Maya risers, so wear sturdy shoes and mind your footing. What is the Ruta Puuc, and are the Loltún caves worth it?

The Ruta Puuc is the backroad ruin circuit south of Uxmal — Kabah (whose Codz Poop wears ~250 interlocking Chaac masks), Sayil's three-story palace, the photogenic Arch of Labná, and quiet Xlapak. The Loltún caves cap it: a 700 m+ guided-only underground walk past cave paintings and "musical" ringing columns. What's the real risk to plan for at Uxmal and on the Puuc route?

Heat and remoteness, not crime. Uxmal's plazas are fully exposed limestone with almost no shade, and the Ruta Puuc runs long stretches with no fuel, water or medical services between sites. Time the visit for early morning or late afternoon, carry 1.5–2 L of water per person plus a hat and SPF, and leave Muna with a full tank; the nearest hospital is Mérida, ~1h15 north. · yucatantoday.com, 2026-07-06
