The trek itself, and the altitude. The gorilla trek is a strenuous, high-altitude (~2,500-3,700m), often muddy rainforest hike — come with moderate fitness; malaria is year-round (prophylaxis + DEET), and it is remote — carry AMREF Flying Doctors + insurance. **FCDO travel advice for Rwanda:** the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to NAMED AREAS — parts of Rusizi District within 10km of the DRC border. *https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/rwanda — page updated 2026-06-10.
